Blogging as Public Exposure

Yes, it's true; I'm blogging. The only reason I am blogging is because my computer is performing a task and I am waiting for it to finish.

Nevermind the fact that pursuing a Ph.D., which isn't exactly easy even if you are young, healthy, and single, and is darn near insane with a family, a newborn, age, and not-so-healthy hanging over you, keeps me swamped. The latest phase has me studying fulltime to pass comprehensive exams.

Despite the fact that David Brin dealt with this issue succinctly in his excellent book The Transparent Society, it seems that people still have difficulty getting their heads around it.

There are two choices for social visibility and information (including surveillance, documents, etc.):

1. Only the powerful have access to information.

Terrorist Network Analysis

This is precisely the kind of sophisticated network analysis and conceptualization that needs to be applied to panarchy as a whole (and not merely to terrorist networks). It would be great to see this method widely used on criminal networks, global smart mobs, cell phones and mobility, etc.

The media term "amorphous terrorist network" doesn't provide much for us to work with. That changes when you apply advanced network theory to the topic.....

The Future of Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing?

Not long ago, I wrote an article on "Social Publishing" on Many-to-Many, which suggests the possibility of a system where

"authors create and distribute their work, and readers, individually and collectively, including fans as well as editors and peers, review, comment, rank, and tag, everything."

So I followed up on the post and, along with a colleague Richard Adler, started Oort-Cloud.org
